Thaddeus R. "Ted" Zapadka, 92, of Petain St., Ellwood City passed away at Evergreen Nursing Center, Harmony on Friday, June 19, 2015. Ted was born in Ellwood City on March 11, 1923, the son of the late Frank and Mary Tanski Zapadka. Ted was preceded in death by his wife, the former Virginia Prokovich on April 21, 2015. They were married on September 15, 1951. Ted served in the Army Air Corp from 1943 through 1946 with the rank of sergeant. He was a member of the 1st Air Commandos out of Burbank, CA. He served in the African Theatre in 1943 and in India from 1943 through 1946 where he was involved in secret mission in Burma code named "Project 9". He received the Good Conduct, African Campaign, Asiatic Pacific Bronze Star, Presidential Citation, American Defense and Meritorious Service medals. Ted retired from US Steel in Ellwood City after 35 years of service. He later worked as grounds keeper at St. Agatha Church and School. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish and the Polish National Alliance. Ted enjoyed walking in Ewing Park in his earlier days. He was there so often he became affectionately known as the mayor of Ewing Park by friends. Ted is survived by his daughters and their husbands, Debbie and Mark Murphy of Ellwood City and Kathy and Nick Curcio of Aberdeen, MD, 5 grandchildren: Brooke (Havyn) Skorupan, Stefanie (Tom) Gaydosz, Lauren (Shane) Christ, Kayla Curcio and Lindsey Curcio, 7 great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, Ted was preceded in death by a great granddaughter, Maren Gaydosz, 3 brothers, Chester, Edward and Henry Zapadka and 2 sisters, Jenny Pawlowski and Ann Taylor. Friends may call at the Joseph A. Tomon, Jr. Funeral Home and Crematory, 97 Grim Avenue, Ellport on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A Blessing Service will be offered at the Joseph A. Tomon, Jr. Funeral Home and Crematory on Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at 8 PM. Full military rites will be offered by the Veterans Honor Guard. Interment will be in Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
