Stephen Chuba, 94, of Sharpsville, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2022 at the Villas at St. Paul’s in Greenville.
Born in Sharpsville on September 2, 1927, Stephen was the son of the late George and Susan Semancik Chuba. After graduating from Sharpsville High School, Stephen played professional baseball for the White Sox organization until he was drafted to serve in the US Army during the Korean War. After the war, he played one more season, and also played professional basketball for the Detroit Vagabonds. He was inducted into the Mercer County Hall of Fame for both baseball and basketball. Stephen married the former Joan Balzic on September 29, 1956. He was a charter member of St. John’s Orthodox Church in Hermitage. He retired in 1984 from Westinghouse Electric. Stephen enjoyed golfing, especially with his son and his grandchildren.
Stephen is survived by his wife, Joan Chuba of Sharpsville, his son and daughter-in-law, David and Leeann Chuba of Sharpsville, three grandchildren, Stephen Thomas Chuba of Sharpsville, Matthew David Chuba of Groton, CT and Rebecca (Jason) Ferguson of Monaca, a great-granddaughter, Luna Ferguson and a sister, Helen Kachaylo of Brookfield, OH.
In addition to his parents, Stephen was preceded in death by five brothers; Michael, John, George, Thomas and Andrew Chuba and three sisters; Anna Chuba, Mary Chuba and Sue Lysohr.
Friends will be received on Monday, May 23 rd from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at St. John’s Orthodox Church, 3180 Morefield Rd., Hermitage. A funeral service will follow the visitation at 11:00 AM with Fr. David Mastroberte, celebrant. Interment will follow in St. John’s Orthodox Cemetery.
