Richard L. Bennett, Sr., 78, of Knox Avenue, Franklin Township, passed away on Monday, March 17, 2014 at UPMC Presbyterian. Born on July 30, 1935 in New Lexington, Ohio, Richard was the son of the late Evan and Elizabeth Shaner Bennett. He married the former Caroline Dietz on November 19, 1972. Richard worked as a supply officer at the Federal Building in Cleveland, Ohio before his retirement. He was a Veteran of the US Air Force serving during the Korean War. He was a member of the Zelienople VFW. Richard enjoyed the outdoors. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Richard is survived by his wife, Caroline Bennett, his children and their spouses, Lynda and George Smathers of Sommerset, OH, Richard L. Bennett, Jr. of Wexford, PA, Cindy and Michael Walters of Ellport, Chris and Carolyn Bennett of Freedom, PA, six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three sisters, Betty Walker of Lancaster, OH, Brenda Fitch of Zanesville, OH and Dora Belle Mead of Stubenville, OH. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Zonola Moore, Eleanor Hipkins and Rachel Ross and four brothers, Lester and Ernest Anderson, Evan and Alfred Bennett. Friends will be received on Thursday, March 20th from 2-4 and 7-9 at the Joseph A. Tomon, Jr. Funeral Home and Crematory, 97 Grim Avenue, Ellport. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, March 21st at 11:00 AM with Rev. Elizabeth Wallace of Knox Presbyterian Church. Full military rites will be offered by the Veteran's Honor Guard. Interment will be in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
