Dr. Anne E. Crowley

Dr. Anne E. Crowley, 91 of 510 Woodside Ave., Ellwood City passed away at the Ellwood City Hospital on July 29, 2011. She was born in Ellwood City on December 1, 1919 to the late James L. and Margaret C. Walsh Crowley. After Anne graduated from Lincoln High School in 1937, she went on to Mercyhurst College in Erie for her BS degree. Anne graduated from Duquesne University with her MA and The University of Chicago with her PhD. She was a member of the Erie Sisters of Mercy from 1939 through 1969. While a Sister she was on the faculty of St. Joseph Academy, Titusville, St. Michael School, Greenville, St. Justin School, Pittsburgh, Mercyhurst Preparatory School, Erie and Mercyhurst College, Erie. Anne was later employed by the American Medical Association in Chicago where she worked in the Division of Medical Education, area of survey and accreditation of American Medical Schools and Medical Residencies. She also worked for the American Association of Osteopathic Medical Schools in Bethesda, MD to conduct a study of the educational programs of American Osteopathic Medical Schools. Anne was an active member of Holy Redeemer Parish where she was a Lector, Eucharistic Minister to the sick, member of the Worship Committee, the Adult Formation and Education Committee and the Bereavement Committee. Anne was also the President of St. Agatha Parish Council during the merger of St. Agatha and P.B.V.M. Parishes. She also served on The Lawrence County Deanery Clergy Distribution Task Force. She was a member of the Ellwood City Historical Society and served on the ECAHS Accession Committee. Anne is survived by 3 sisters and a brother-in-law, Helen Anstead, Lincoln, MI, Margaret DeFede and Loretta and David Bauer, Hobe Sound, FL, 2 brothers and 4 sisters-in-law, Gerald and Jane Crowley, Ellwood City, Ray and Jo Ann Crowley, Valparaiso, IN, Dorothy Crowley, Ellwood City and Suzanne Crowley, San Antonio, TX. She is also survived by 16 nieces and nephews and 33 great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers, John Crowley, Rev. Kenan (Robert) Crowley, OFM Cap. and Rev. Thomas Crowley. Friends may call at the Joseph A. Tomon, Jr. Funeral Home, 97 Grim Ave., Ellport on Monday, August 1, 2011 from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 10 AM at Holy Redeemer Church by Fr. Mark L. Thomas. Interment will follow in Holy Redeemer Cemetery. Family suggests Memorial Contributions can be made in Anne's name to the Ellwood City Area Public Library or the Ellwood City Historical Society.

I met Anne when we were both working for the American Medical Association in Chicago where we worked to add physicians' continuing medical education data to the physician data base. My deepest sympathy to Anne's family for this loss.
