Cornelius J. Schawalder, 90, of Magee Road, Perry Township passed away on Friday, April 22, 2011 at North Hills Passavant Hospital. Born on March 31, 1921 in Pittsburgh, PA he was the son of the late Cornelius & Rosalie Hollik Schawalder. He married the former Ruth Landon on May 15, 1946. Mr. Schawalder owned and operated C.J. Schawalder and Sons in the North Hills. He was a member of St. Christopher's on the Lake Catholic Church and a former member of the Portersville Rotary Club and Air Heritage of Chippewa. A Veteran of WWII, he served as a Corporal in the Army Air Force, 830th Bombardment Squadron, where he received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 10 Bronze Stars. Mr. Schawalder enjoyed woodworking and airplane restoration. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Lisa Schawalder of Wilkins Township and a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Bill Deffner of Harmony, a sister, Mary Jane Swany of Wenatchee, WA and two brothers, Richard Schawalder of Zelienople and Robert Schawalder of Hawaii, 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Robert and Daniel Schawalder. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
