Joseph A. Tomon, Jr.Joseph A. Tomon Jr. is the son of the late Joseph A. Tomon, Sr. and Rosella Lombardo Tomon. He was raised in Ellport, Pa., and attended Ellport and St. Agatha Schools. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1970. He attended the University of Cincinnati and graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1973.

He served his apprenticeship at the Joe Spitler Funeral Home in Montoursville, PA and worked as a Funeral Director for the H. P. Brandt Funeral Home in Pittsburgh and the John Henderson Co. Funeral Home in Johnstown, PA before purchasing the P.O. Contrucci Funeral Home in Ellwood City, Pa. in 1979. In 1990 he purchased the Robert F. Leipheimer Funeral Home in Farrell, Pa.

While in Johnstown at the Henderson Funeral Home, Joe helped with the identification and embalming of the victims of the 1977 Johnstown flood. In 1995, he helped at the site of the crash site of the U.S. Airways Flight 427, and later at the morgue. In 2001, he helped both at the morgue and at Seven Springs, meeting with and helping families of the victims of United Flight 93.  In January of 2002, Joe spent two weeks working with the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office.  While there, Joe’s duties included releasing remains of victims to funeral directors.

Joe is a life long member of St. Agatha Church, now Holy Redeemer Parish. He was a former member and past president of the Parish Council. He also belongs to the Knights of Columbus, Ellwood City SOI, and Ellwood City Lions Club. He is also a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, where he presently serves as Pennsylvania’s delegate to the NFDA Policy Board. Joe is a Past President of the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association. He is a member of both the Mercer County Funeral Directors Association and the Beaver-Lawrence County Association where he is a Past President and member of the Board of Directors.

He is a certified Enucleator and performs donor eye enucleations for CORE in Western Pennsylvania. Joe is also a Certified Crematory Operator.

Joe resides above the Ellwood City Funeral Home with his wife, the former Patricia L. Watson. He has been a Pittsburgh Penguin season ticket holder since the 1974-75 season, and enjoys collecting and trading game-worn hockey jerseys with collectors all over the world.


Jennifer L. Tomon is a daughter of Joseph A. Tomon, Jr. and the former Patricia L. Watson. She was raised in Ellwood City and is a 1995 graduate of Lincoln High School. In 1999, she received her bachelor’s degree in political science from Allegheny College in Meadville, PA. Jennifer attended the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science and graduated with her diploma in September of 2000. She has been a licensed funeral director since 2001.

Jennifer is a member of the National Funeral Director’s Association, the Pennsylvania Funeral Director’s Association, and both the Mercer County and Beaver-Lawrence County Funeral Director’s Associations. She currently serves as the executive director of the Beaver-Lawrence County FDA.  She is also a Certified Crematory Operator. In October of 2005, Jennifer joined the Ellwood City Rotary Club and she currently serves as a director on the Ellwood City Area School Board.  She was able to work at the morgue site in Shanksville, PA at the crash of United Flight 093 following the September 11th attacks.
